#1 - 1948

In El Paso during the time we lived in the garage apartment behind Grandma's house on 1209 Prospect.. Daddy was out of the Army after WWII and was working for Abe Feinberg.

Abe Feinberg owned the largest if not the only scrap metal company in El Paso after the war.  Daddy started out driving a flatbed truck for him right after the war.  He used to tell funny and sometimes scary stories about competing for the right of way with the street cars in down town and the trouble driving and/or backing over the street car tracks.  He and Daddy became very good friends, and Abe wanted him to stay so much, he offered Daddy a full partnership.  After much soul searching, he decided that he wanted to own his own farm.

We went to East Texas where his family lived and he farmed for almost a year in
the Sulphur Springs / Cumby area east of Commerce, Texas. Then he gave up and went into the Air Force.  He never gave up on his dream, though, and fulfilled it in a successful way after he retired to Arkansas. Daddy was born at home in the Cumby community. Both grandparents are buried in a small cemetery which was behind a little country church.

#2 - 1949

Taken about the time Daddy went into the Air Force and we moved to Louisiana.  Grandma made the suit Ruth is wearing as well as all winter coats she had before we went to Germany. Grandma did this on a pedal sewing machine. Mom used a pedal Singer also into the late 50's.

Taken in Albuquerque, just before Susie was born.

When we moved to Albuquerque, there was just not enough housing available.  So Mother and Daddy bought a house.  He had to have a co-signer, and Abe came to the rescue without hesitation.  Mother, Susie and I actually lived in El Paso with Grandma for about 3 months while the house was being completed.  I went to the grade school down the hill from the house.

Ruth had a very unfriendly start in grade school in Louisiana, but the teacher in El Paso was absolutely wonderful.  She turned the entire scholastic experience around for Ruth.  After that, I always loved school.  I still enjoy classes and learning of any kind.

#4 - 1950

Susie was born on May 21, 1950 in Albuquerque, and Ruth was born May 23, 1943 – same Sunday in May. The picture of Mom, Susie and Ruth was taken in the carport of our house in Albuquerque.  Susie was about 1 week old.

#5 - 1950

The picture of Ruth in the chair was made while we were living at Grandma’s while our house in Albuquerque was being finished.

#6 - 1950

Taken at the new house in Albuquerque – this was the carport wall.  Daddy had an old Ford he rebuilt and painted it himself – Ming Blue.  Susie helped by painting this wall as high as she could reach – of course, Ming Blue.  Even after many coats of white paint, it was never the same again.
